Cambridge Public Schools

CSV volunteers serve the students of the Cambridge Public Schools, Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. We work closely with the Cambridge Public School Department, operating as an independent non-profit organization.

There are 17 public schools—11 elementary, 4 upper, one K-8 dual-immersion Spanish/English school, and one comprehensive high school—enrolling just under 7,000 students annually. CSV provides volunteers in all of these schools.

We rely on funding from individuals, foundations, universities, and corporations to supplement the funding we receive from the Cambridge Public Schools. In this way, we ensure that our paid staff is able to continue to help all Cambridge school children thrive by constructively and purposefully channeling the volunteerism of the community.

Cambridge Public Schools students are from various backgrounds, circumstances, and countries of origin. In the 2021–22 school year, there are 6,600 enrolled students.

King Open School - Cambridge MA

12 Elementary Schools

The elementary schools (PreK–Grade 5, including the Amigos School/Escuela Amigos, a K–8 school) each have a student body of between 250 and 350 students. With Cambridge’s “controlled choice” system of school assignment, parents/guardians have a say in selecting schools, so these are not “neighborhood schools” in the usual way. Students may be from the neighborhood of the school or may not.

Four Upper Schools

The four upper schools (Grades 6-8) serve between 260–300 students each. A fifth school, Amigos School/Escuela Amigos, has an enrollment of approximately 100 students.
