Meet Two More Staff Interns!

We are happy to introduce our 3rd and 4th interns for the semester, Lizaby Scott and Hanna Otani. Both are students at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, and like their counterparts Suzy and Brian, both were at-the-ready from the time CSV launched its annual kick-off event in late September. Welcome both!

Lizaby is in the Ed School’s Human Development and Psychology program. Her interest in education began while a summer camp counselor. Since then, she has tutored math and science to 7th and 8th graders in Capetown, South Africa, and has worked on an anti-violence documentary with an after-school group.

She has multiple roles at CSV, including assisting executive director Jen with such tasks as online volunteer registration and editing some of CSV’s promotional materials. She juggles her administrative duties with her role as volunteer tutor in a King Open School 4th grade Writer’s Workshop where she assists teacher Amy Monkiewicz. Since Lizaby would like to become an elementary teacher, her experience in the classroom has been truly rewarding, working with 4th graders both one-to-one and in small groups. She especially likes to help young writers with essays and stories about their lives.

CSV’s fourth intern, Hanna Otani, is concentrating in International Education Policy. Her goals include studying how community engagement can improve educational quality and access in developing countries. A native of Japan, Hanna came to the U.S. for first grade and clearly remembers being part of the diversity and the work that went into respecting various cultural differences. She stayed for many years but returned to Japan for college. Now back for her M.Ed. degree, Hanna is assisting CSV with its College Ready program. In addition to helping at each week’s tutor/student sessions, she is also conducting research on last year’s College Ready cohort. Her task is to determine whether the program has made a difference for those who are now in college. Future plans for Hanna are to live and teach in another part of the world, such as sub-Saharan Africa. She looks forward to working in an international organization with a diverse staff.

Some other interesting facts about Lizaby and Hanna – Lizaby is a registered EMT in the state of Louisiana and is learning Italian. Hanna plays the cello and is fluent in French as well as Japanese. CSV welcomes both Lizaby and Hanna!
