Wondering what the inside of a middle school math textbook looks like these days? Had you joined the almost 25 adult volunteer tutors at a recent middle school math workshop, you’d have learned that “Do the Math: Brain at Work” is actually a chapter in the latest math text (*Math in Focus*) used by the Cambridge Public Schools. Presenter and CPSD math coach, Danielle DeNufrio, began the hands-on workshop with a math problem from Chapter 7. It was all “math talk” from then on!

Using examples from the textbook and classroom, Danielle engaged the group with the current thinking on how students are learning to frame mathematical questions. As an example, tutors explored different methods for working with positive and negative numbers. One approach included using colored chips; another used vertical and horizontal lines. Others shared their own ways of adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. In short, it was a fun and practical learning experience for all.

The math workshop was participatory, organized and topical for both the new and veteran volunteers who help middle schoolers with math homework. CSV is always delighted to provide the rich resources of the Cambridge Public School teaching and coaching staff to enhance the work done by volunteers. Thank you, Danielle and volunteers.
